What is Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM)?

Planned preventive maintenance involves the inspection and maintenance of your catering equipment under a maintenance contract to catch potential issues before they result in costly repairs, or worse, complete equipment failure.

PPMs are an excellent way to reduce breakdowns, costly repairs, loss of business and even harm to employees!

All equipment within the PPM contract will benefit from annual safety inspections, gas inspections, heavy services and light/interim servicing carried out by the manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations. This will also ensure that the equipment remains compliant with the manufacturer’s warranty conditions.

Typically, all equipment connections are checked, safety and functionality are tested, with basic repairs are carried out.

For gas appliances, these will also be:

  • vacuumed;
  • valves greased;
  • injectors and burners cleaned;
  • then finally tested.

Whilst refrigeration units will be

  • cleaned to ensure they are free of debris and dust;
  • fans are checked;
  • temperatures and thermostats are checked and calibrated when needed.

For example, dusty condenser coils cause your refrigeration to work harder as it will struggle to maintain temperature, resulting in increased energy bills and a shorter equipment lifecycle because the other components are “stressed” or working too hard.

Alongside planned maintenance, using original equipment manufacturer parts (OEM) which are made directly by the manufacturer will help to reduce the number of future replacement parts and repairs. They are designed specifically for the equipment rather than a universal one fit for all parts.
